I come home from work to my tropical blue yoga mat spread across my bedroom floor, instantly bringing me a sense of calm as I think of the ocean surface. I light some sage and step onto my mat. My arms flow up and down as my breath guides me, my brain slowly begins to quiet. A light breeze blows through the window offering a bit of relief from my warm room. The worries and questions of the day have dissolved, as I sit on my mat like a blank canvas, absorbing the peace and energy that is around me. After sitting still and simply breathing I open my eyes to a new world....
I have become grateful for my moments of "stillness," as my days seem to get busier and busier by the day. It has become a special time to reconnect with myself and slow down. It is easy to loose oneself in chores and making plans for the future, but the most valuable thing I have learned from starting a meditation/yoga practice is that there is nothing like the present. I find myself more open and grateful and because of that more opportunities have come around and even relationships have grown stronger. I have become more in-touch with myself and intimate with the world around me...a cup of tea in the early morning while listening to the birds has become a lovely occasion or even noticing the unique pattern the speckled sunlight makes across my bedspread. Beauty and stillness can be found in the details...
Nutritionally speaking , perhaps the next time you are about to eat try and make it a sacred moment. Light some candles, sit down, and be grateful for the delicious meal you have prepared for yourself. You will absorb the nutrients more readily and digest it easier when your body is calm. You are nurturing yourself, just as your breath nurtures you.
