It is a lovely warm evening as I write from my hammock in my back yard. I haven't written in a while....have been so busy with the start of my nutrition program, but thought this warm evening in a hammock would be the perfect place to escape and think...
I have been loving every minute of my classes and it only confirms how passionate I feel about the subject of nutrition. There are 8 other people in my program, many of which, lost someone they loved to a disease as well, and ultimately, it is what brought them to the program...with the hopes to heal others through food.
Did you know that the U.S. spends more per capita on health care than any other society in the world, but still two thirds of Americans are overweight and over 15 million Americans have diabetes? Its our addiction to sugar and ultra-processed food that has skewed our image and understanding of food and has left our bodies depleted, sick, and overweight.
I believe there is hope though and that is farmer's markets. More and more people are awakening and understanding how sick we are making ourselves from our sugar and chemically loaded foods. At a farmer's market we have access to organic, nutritious, fresh produce, and also importantly, we are supporting the farmers. Did you know on average, the food in the U.S. travels 15,000 miles to get from farm to grocery store? These are the sprayed and processed foods that we have become so accustomed to. One might say that food in the supermarket is cheaper than some products at a farmers' market, but if you take into account the tax dollars that are spent on transporting these foods, the CO2 levels that are being released into our environment, and in the end, the trillions of dollars being spent on health care, the organic foods at the farmers' market are cheaper.
I went to a farmer's market a few days ago and bought quite a few things for $35 + I was so excited about my farm fresh eggs....hmmm....maybe two chickens in the back yard are needed...how about Poppy and Tulah?
;-)

Over the past few days I have been able to enjoy golden egg yolks, fresh kale smoothies, and radishes with hummus has become my new favorite work snack! All while knowing I am nourishing my body with chemical free rich foods...
Do a bit of research about your food and check-in with yourself after you eat....do you feel balanced and energized? In my nutrition class I learned some helpful tips when buying food...
if you can't pronounce the ingredients...don't buy it..
if there are more than 5 ingredients don't buy it...
Hope everyone has had a lovely start to the crazy moon energized month of April...I can feel it!
Love,
~M
